An Ailsa Craig Curling Stone, Late 19th century

£160.00

A wonderful and slightly earlier example of an Ailsa Craig granite curling stone.

The standard dimensions of a curling stone where not set until the twentieth century.  Before this stones could be made in a variety of sizes and shapes.  Some early 19th and 18th century examples are literally a rock with an iron handle fitted.  This one is of good quality with a bronze top handle with a leather pad between the handle and stone, and unusually, an off set wooden grip.  The stone is fatter from top to bottom, with a smooth top and bottom surface with a raw stone contact band around the circumference.  A lovely object to handle and look at.

The central iron pin which usually suffers from corrosion has been stabilised and the handle is firm.
