An Ailsa Craig Curling Stone, late 19th century

£160.00

Curling Stones are such wonderfully tactile objects!  They look so interesting, and such a decorative object, so Country House.  This one is in amazing condition and very good quality.  It has a bronze mount with a hard wood handle.  The Granite stone itself comes from the Island of Ailsa Craig, which is off the west coast of Scotland, and can be seen from the Isle of Arran.  The stone is polished smooth top and bottom with a rough textured contact patch around the circumference.

The handle is typically attached to the stone with an iron rod which goes through the stone and terminates on the underside.  Usually the iron rod deteriorates if left outside and the handle turns. We stabilise this to protect from further deterioration, and the handle is firm.
